Practicing Energy Conservation

Recently, the Philippines has been experiencing rotational blackouts lasting up to eight hours. With the onset of the El Nino phenomenon, Filipinos are made to suffer the hottest summer ever.

MERALCO announces weekly in their website the schedule of rotating blackouts and which areas of a certain region will be affected. According to them, the power shortage is caused by the shutdown of power plants. Thus, this has reduced the electricity being produced and supplied for the consumption of MERALCO customers.

Last March 27, 2010, we were all invited to participate in Earth Hour. Households and business establishments were encouraged to switch off all electrical appliances and say YES to Mother Earth by using candles and rechargeable lamps. This was from 8:30-9:30 pm. Participants of this major annual event numbered in the thousands in Manila alone.

Here are more more means and ways to conserve energy this summer season:

  1. Use the stairs when going up and down 3 floors.
  2. Use a bike or public transportation when travelling shorter distances than you usually do.
  3. Take advantage of the availability of sunlight. Practice daylight saving time.
These small acts if done and practiced by every human regularly may help us all cope with our energy crisis and power shortage.
